Hi All
I've posted another installment of Chapter One on the Topic Page. The back story is over, and Latchmin is at the home of her in-laws. Is she having fun?
Traumatic or what!
Read it and post a comment.
See you later
Bye for now

Set in 1917 Trinidad, twelve year old Amina becomes very ill with typhoid fever and close to death. Miraculously, she begins to recover, but is horrified to discover that her parents have broken their promise to her, and a marriage is arranged. She hoped to remain in education to become a teacher. But she is prepared to fight, and together with her friend Sumati, they make a pact. But Sumati's falls in love, and takes a path which endangers both of them.

- The Wedding Drums - my novel set in an early 20C village in Trinidad is almost here. Two young girls, Amina and Sumati plot to escape their arranged marriages and plan to live life following their own dreams. But Sumati falls in love and runs away, putting Amina's plans in jeopardy. Neither of them bank on what is in store for them. Soon they face the adult world of scheming men, corruption, prostitution and violence, and life in the village will never be the same again.
I have now read Ch 1 and I'm dying to know what happens next!
ReplyDeleteA comment on the content: I would have liked more detail, more human interest, dialogue etc, for example, how did the bride feel about her wedding? (we had a tantalising hint after the pep-talk from her mother), what was she wearing exactly? (we know it was fine silks and jewellery designed by her father, so very special),what happened at the ceremony?(I've never seen a Hindu wedding) and what about the groom? he seemed to fade out....
I particularly enjoyed the historical context and would have liked more details about that, too.
I'm completely hooked, and want to know how this indulged child copes as a 'doolahin' in a strange household; bring on Ch 2!!
Hi Alison B
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I am pleased you are completely hooked! But you will have to be patient and wait for the next installment...which I have posted only just now.
The reason there is little dialogue so far is that the historical context doesn't lend itself in this part...but soon it will come, and very revealing too, as to the characteristics of certain characters.
I will post some info on some historical detail in the Topic Pages of the blog. So watch out for those too.
Bye for now

Poor Latchmin! Why did her mother not prepare her properly for her duties as a married woman?
ReplyDeleteShe has sent her as a lamb to the slaughter.
I hope she turns out to be a fast learner.
Hi Alison B
ReplyDeleteYou're really getting into this, I see. I like it!
To answer your question - Latchmin was spoilt as she had had typhoid. Added to that, her parents didn't really want her to marry, but to continue school. But "their responsiblity to marry off their daughter overrode what they desired for her."
Also, they made a deal with Rajnath's parents to send Latchmin to school till sixteen...
